Coordinating Photo Frames With Scrapbook Paper
May 28, 2010

Tired of the boring old white and off-white picture matting. Do you want to add a little more color to your walls or find a way to display different picture frames together but they just don't quite look right?

Safety: Cutting the scrapbook paper requires the use of a very sharp razor blade, always take care when cutting to cut away from yourself.

Step 1:

Pick out a picture frame that has matting around the picture. This is great to give old frames a fresh new look and to clean up second hand frames that may have old or stained matting.
Step 2:

Take apart the frame and set the frame and glass to the side.
Step 3:

Lay down a piece of scrapbook paper design side down and lay the picture mat on top of it aligning the corners. Use the razor blade and cut along the outside edges of the picture mat so you now have a piece of scrapbook paper that is the same size as the picture mat. We used a standard kitchen cutting board for this as it helps to hold the paper in place and keeps you from cutting into your table or countertops.
Step 4:

Keeping the picture mat on the scrapbook paper, make two diaganol cuts across the open space in the picture mat from opposite corner to opposite corner to make a X across the opening.
Step 5:

Fold back the four triangles that you just created to sit flush with the back of the picture mat. Tape back these triangles to the back of the picture mat to keep it from moving when placing it in the frame.
Step 6:

Put the glass, picture mat and a picture back into your frame and enjoy your results.
Step 7:

Here you can see the back of the picture mat from the frame that had two openings.
Step 8:

Why stop at just one picture when you can coordinate an entire wall of pictures. This is a great way to tie together different types of frames using scrapbook paper that has a similiar color or design. The possibilities are endless.
