Are you looking for some extra time-saving, money-saving practical tips? I know I am! Every Tuesday, together with Good Deal MamaJessica's Coupons, and Kroger Krazy, (AKA "The Tipsters") we will share our own individual tips that will either help you save time or money, or maybe even both!

Today's Tip is brought to you by Janel from Good Deal Mama!

Here is a quick and easy recipe to make homemade Febreze! Since I love the smell of Suavitel, I will be trying this with Sauvitel fabric softener!

What you will need:

2 cups water

1 cup fabric softener

Directions:

Place ingredients in a spray bottle and shake well to mix. Test a small unnoticeable area first before using to make sure no discoloration or damage occurs. Use as needed, shaking well each time before use.

Viola! Save $4 on that store bought stuff ;)

Homemade Air Freshener

What you will need:

Canning Jar, any size

Fabric or Scrapbook Paper

Baking Soda

Essential oil or Fragrance Oil

(Scissors, Pen, Needle)

Directions:

Cut your fabric into a square or circle. I cut the fabric slightly larger than the lid because I like the edges to slightly drape over the jar.

(If you are using scrapbook paper use the disc part of the lid to trace on to your scrapbook paper, and cut out your circle)

Pour Baking Soda into your jar (about 1/2 full)

Next add about 10-20 drops of your favorite essential/ fragrance oil

Place the fabric or scrapbook paper inside the lid and screw it onto the jar. Using a large needle, carefully poke several holes it the fabric or paper

Gently shake the jar every few days to refresh the scent and add more oil as needed.

The baking soda naturally absorbs odors while the essential oil gives off a light pleasant scent. It is frugal and also much cuter than most air fresheners!

You can change the fabric and paper depending on your decor or the Season.

(Remember, this DIY project should be done by an adult and keep out of reach of small children)

Today's Tip is brought to you by yours truly! Laughing

Last week on the Rose Knows Coupons Facebook page, I reached out to my readers asking what they used for hard water stains like the ones shown above. I've had this issue for years now due to our hard Wisconsin water and since I've never experienced this issue when we lived in city, this was all very new to me. I've tried numerous cleaning products including Lime-A-Way and CLR, Mr. Clean Magic Eraser (which did nothing for this issue), and even lots of elbow grease. It never got better, just worse. My counters are crushed quartz so using an abrasive sponge was not an option. I was afraid it would scratch the surface.

There were lots of readers who suggested I soak the area with hot vinegar. I've used vinegar plenty of times with laundry, windows, and as an air freshener, but never on hard water stains!

I filled a microwave safe dish about 1 cup full of straight white vinegar. I heated it up until it was hot to the touch and unrolled my paper towel. I then started with one end of the paper towel and put it in the microwave safe dish. After the paper towel soaked up the vinegar, I removed it with a tongs and wrapped it around the faucet, soap dispenser, and dishwasher vent. I repeated this process every 20 minutes or so for several hours by heating the paper towel up in the microwave over and over.

The end result was fewer hard water stains on my counter top! I wouldn't say it was completely removed, but I didn't expect that 5 years of hard water stains would come off in just a few hours of repeating this process. There is a noticeable difference and I will definitely continue to remove my hard water stains with this paper towel soaked hot vinegar process! Smile

If you’re a sponge-user like me, or your kids don't know how to rinse off the sponge after they use it, then you know all too well that unpleasant smell that starts to develop that you certainly do not want anywhere near your sink, let alone touching the dishes you will be eating from. You don’t have to throw that sponge away and buy a new one!! There is hope!! I have tried everything (bleach, lemon, anti-bacterial soap, etc.) but nothing is proven to kill 99.99% of bacteria like these two solutions:

If you’re in a hurry and it’s the only sponge you have, you can try my #1 solution: The Microwave.

  • Soak your sponge really well with water
  • “Heat” in the microwave for 1 minute
  • Careful when removing…that little guy gets HOT!!

If you have a little more time, load your sponges in the dishwasher with your dishes and run through the entire wash and DRY cycle. I will warn that when you let it run through the “dry” cycle, it may come out a little deformed – but this is part of the bacteria-killing process.

Both of these methods are proven to inactivate bacteria. And Wal-Lah! No more stink! :)
